For females it is recommended that you do not drink regularly more than 2-3 units a day and for males 3-4 units a day regularly drink more than 3-4 units a day. It is also advised to have at least 2 days in a week where you don’t drink any alcohol.

Alcohol , Driving and the effects

When drinking  a small quantity of alcohol it can make people feel more relaxed but with drinking a large volume of alcohol you can become even more relaxed, loud, sometimes aggressive and violent. Small amounts of alcohol in your system can effect your driving ability :

  • Concentration levels will be effected
  • Judging the speed of your vehicle will be effected
  • The distance you put between your car and other cars could be effected
  • You might not notice traffic lights, pedestrians and other hazards
  • Your balance, especially if you are riding a motorcycle
  • Vision can become blurry

Facts on drink driving related figures for 2012

  • 6,670 – drink drive accidents
  • 1,210 – people seriously injured in drink drive accidents
  • 280 – people killed in drink drive accidents
  • 363 people were arrested for drink driving between 6 am and 8 am

The last bullet point on people being arrested between 6 am and 8 am highlights that people don’t relise how long it takes for alcohol to come out of your system. Myths such as cold shower, black coffee or water do not help getting rid of the alcohol in your system. Make sure you don’t have a heavy session of drinking the next day before work if you are driving, DRINK RESPONSIBLE!
