Drugs & Alcohol Screening

Drugs and Alcohol Screening

We can carry out drug and alcohol screening in line with your Company Policy. We use a Home Office Approved Breathalyser for the alcohol screen and urine to strict Chain of Custody protocols for the drug test. We can advise on fitness to work after drug and alcohol testing and have a Medical Reporting Officer at the testing lab who can give advice as needed.

This is just a screening process and if a Non Negative result is found it is the Lab that gives the definitive result.

In order to ensure that the strict Chain of Custody process is followed exactly Workare has devised its own Chain of Custody check form which ensures that a rigorous process is followed. The process has to be robust enough to stand up to legal scrutiny.

Why Do We Do It?

Workplace substance misuse policies (drug and alcohol policy) are recognised as having a major impact in dealing with the problems associated with inappropriate use of drugs and alcohol in the workplace. Screening can help reduce accidents and long term sickness.

Drugs Screening: Instant Drug Test

We screen for drugs by using  a urine sample and normally screen for 12 different drug groups with our instant test kit. If the results with us are non negative the sample is sent to an Accredited Laboratory for further analysis. This testing takes into account any declared medication on the questionnaire and a definitive result is e-mailed to us within a few days.

  • Amphetamines (AMP)
  • Cocaine (COC)
  • Opiates (OPI)
  • Cannabis (THC)
  • Methamphetamines/MDMA/Ecstasy (MET)
  • Benzodiazepine (BZO)
  • Barbiturates (BAR)
  • Ketamine (KET)
  • Methadone (MTD)
  • EDDP (EDDP)
  • Phencyclidine (PCP)
  • Propoxyphene (PPX)

Alcohol Screening

We use a Home Office approved Drager Alcotest unit 6810. This unit has a patented mouthpiece with a non-return valve to prevent any form of manipulation, and the sample collection is controlled by an in-built microprocessor. Test results are displayed on the illuminated graphics LC display accompanied by colour LEDs and acoustic signals. We also use a wireless mobile printer for printing out the results.

Meow Meow Screening

We are pleased to announce that we can now screen for the recreational drug Mephedrone. A sample of urine is collected and sent to the Laboratory for analysis. It is sold as plant food which implies it is a natural product but it is made by chemists and is a popular recreational drug There are many side effects attributed to Mephedrone use including poor mental performance and anxiety and depression. It is a stimulant drug and in common use.

Workare Provides

  • Trained staff to carry out the screening.
  • All equipment needed.

We can come on site (minimum numbers apply) or you can send people to us at Waterton Industrial Estate in Bridgend. As a company you need to have in place a Drug and Alcohol Policy before you can test anyone. If you need assistance with this we can help.

Your Policy needs to state when you can test for drugs

  • Recruitment (this should be referred to in the letter of employment)
  • Random
  • For cause
  • Due cause
  • Post incident
  • Group monitoring
  • Individual monitoring

It also has to be specific in stating what you are testing for. The results are considered personal sensitive data under the Data Protection Act.

Problem solver – what is your responsibility as an employer?

Scenario?  You send an employee for a routine drug test and he arrives in the company owned transit van.  His test proves non negative as it has the presence of xxxx shown on instant test. It has to go to the Lab for further analysis and a definitive result as to the amount of xxx substance in the sample.

Can the employee drive the van away from the testing venue?

Planned Random Testing

We can also offer planned random testing on site where we will visit a site on any agreed day and carry out drug and alcohol testing.

With Cause and Post Incident Testing – in conjunction with SYNLAB

We can now offer post incident drug and alcohol screening or with cause screening on site. This could be justified where there are reasonable grounds to suspect that employee’s actions or behaviour has contributed to an accident or incident in work. A SYNLAB collection officer will attend the site and can be available within 2 hours of the telephone call and will carry out the testing and send any samples to the laboratory. A Drug and Alcohol Policy needs to be in place and we can assist with this.
