Using drugs and alcohol in the workplace can be very serious. it can lead to health problems, become a hazard to them-self and others in the workplace. Even drugs prescribed by a doctor can affect a workers ability, especially if their job involves a lot of concentration. Some people do require drugs to help them live a normal life which they could not do their work without taking them. When workers are socializing on the weekend they may drink or use recreational drugs socially and may come to work with no difference in there performance but if they are under the influence of drugs and alcohol while working it becomes a workplace problem. Workers could turn to drugs or alcohol because of stress in the workplace or because they suffer pain from working.

Have a Drugs and Alcohol Policy in Place!

By having a clear and precise Drug and Alcohol policy in place you will be able to help or deal with the worker quickly and efficiently without any problems. The policy should aim to help workers and encourage them to seek help. Everyone should know about the policy, managers, staff so they know promptly to deal with the problem.

Drug and Alcohol policy tips

  • Make sure the phrasing is accurate
  • Don’t say “under the influence” – you may not be able to prove it
  • Do the staff understand the policy – What’s their English like?
  • Have they signed the policy? And is it relevant now
  • Ensure all the staff/employees have read it – not away on holiday
  • What about “legal highs?”
  • You need to say what drugs you are testing for
  • Make sure you use a credible testing organisation.
